Discovering practices for common-good-oriented city-making in Berlin

How do grassroots urban initiatives organise themselves to promote socially and environmentally sustainable cities?

Duration: 2 days

Client: Urban Knowledge Collective

Partners: Urbane Praxis e.V., Baustelle Gemeinwohl Plattform

Project Lead: Miriam Rausch

Date: 2024

In 2024, in collaboration with the Urban Knowledge Collective, Urbane Praxis e.V. and Baustelle Gemeinwohl the Urban Travel Agency organised a two-day field trip to Berlin to engage with local grassroots initiatives. The excursion created a space for exchange between urban practitioners and organisers working on socially and environmentally sustainable urban futures.

Through visits, conversations and shared reflections, participants explored different models of organising grassroots urban initiatives, focusing on governance structures, collaboration, funding and relationships with public institutions. The field trip offered insights into grassroot organising practices and equipped participants with tools to build local networks while navigating financial, political and administrative constraints.
