In 2021, students of the Master in Urban Studies (VUB/ULB Brussels) organised the first international Urban Knowledge Collective learning platform Imagining Urban Publics. Originally planned as a physical excursion, the exchange was developed into a hybrid experience in response to Covid-19.
Over three days, around 100 participants from across the world explored how public space is performed, negotiated and transformed. The gathering combined talks, embodied exercises, audio-guided walks, film screenings, workshops, games and discussions. As a hybrid event, all these activities took place online, testing how learning, exchange and encounter can take place across great distances and diverse contexts.
By weaving together diverse formats and perspectives, Imagining Urban Publics became a collective journey through different understandings of publicness. Thereby, participants learned to question public–private boundaries and to design inclusive and caring public space.
